Sarah Medway started designing shoes for the Medway Shoe Group In 1974. There were branches in Baker Street, Oxford Street, New Bond Street, Sloane Square, Kensington High Street, the Strand and also in Brighton. Sarah concentrated on designing ladies shoes, boots and handbags.
Her designs became increasingly popular, worn by stars of film and television. She decided to design a couture range, and opened two boutiques of Sarah Medway Couture Shoes at the Ritz Arcade, Ritz Hotel, 150 Piccadilly, W1J 9BR, and also at 196 Sloane Street, Knightsbridge, SW1X 9QX.
Many of her designs were inspired by her love of the Natural World. Some of the designs incorporated different colours and skins, which were collaged together. She was known for her unusual use of leather, suede and snakeskin which was often interlaced, ruched, plaited, padded and knotted. Shoes and bags were decorated with leather or suede appliqué or bows. Knee, ankle and cowboy boots with patchwork skins, cuffs and lattice work overlay.
Popular evening favourites were gold, silver and bronze court shoes with matching clutch bags. Black suede evening wear, courts, mules or pumps embroidered with silver or gold thread, depicting cobwebs with diamanté drops, leaves, flowers, and beaded insects. Black, wine and indigo suede court shoes with jet or beaded trims or heels. Black and red sequinned court shoes.
